I decided I wanted to play around with tiny log cabin blocks the other day. I had so much fun I made five. Four became coasters -
I'm disappointed with the skipped stitches in my quilting, but I was using a size 9 needle and maybe it just wasn't up to the task. I later switched to a size 14 and didn't seem to have any more trouble.
I love the backs of these coasters too!
The fifth log cabin became an easy pincushion. I experimented with the triple stitch on my machine for the quilting on this one.
I just love these colors!
AND, I just have to share that I used basting spray for the first time ever on these little log cabins and I'm IN LOVE. Sooo nice to not mess with pin basting on such a tiny "quilt sandwich." I used 505 Basting Spray from my LQS, but I'd like to find something cheaper. The 505 spray was $13 - yikes! Not sure I'd be willing to use it on a larger quilt at that price.
I definitely see more tiny log cabins in my future . . . too much fun, and perfect for scraps!
Happy sewing!
Mary
your coasters are too cute! I also purchased that hedgehog fabric... not sure what I will be doing with me...
ReplyDeletethe blue/turquoise looks great with the orange.
I am also a fan of log cabin.
I am interested to see what you will be doing next!
Oh! I see the Amy scraps! Those are adorable! I was thinking of making coasters too. Did you just use one layer of batting, turn and then quilt? That was my plan. The hedgies are too cute. I have a hedgie project in the works too!
ReplyDeleteThese colors are so great together! Love the little pincushion.
ReplyDeletethose couldn't be cuter!!! you are sew talented!! ;)
ReplyDelete(seriously though!)
I love the coasters and pincusion ... so cute! I'm really loving tangerine and aqua at the moment. I just bought a fabric bundle with those exact colours the other day.
ReplyDeleteThis is the time when Joann's comes in handy - they run sales on the basting spray, they also have coupons - I hoard my coupons or watch for 50% off quilting notions sales. Then I stock up!
ReplyDeleteFYI, for small items (potholder size or smaller), you can use Rave 4 hairspray instead of basting spray! I wouldn't use it on anything large that you might have to roll up to quilt, but for smaller stuff it works ok. Just iron the item after you spray and sandwich - the heat helps set the "sticky". And the best part? Hairspray is $1.99 a can at Walmart!
Beautiful coasters and pincushion, by the way!!
These are adorable :-)
ReplyDeleteI just started with the 505 basting spray, too, and love it. I have done 3 baby quilts with one can, and still have some to go....I don't use too thick of a coat, and it lasts, so I think it is worth the cost!
So cute! Love the colors.
ReplyDeleteOh Mary, those blocks are adorable...especially the pincushion. I am a sucker for tiny log cabin pincushions...too cute! For small projects I use Sulky kk2000 from Jo-Anns....I only buy it when I have a 40% coupon.
ReplyDeleteI think your log cabin's are the cutest! I love the colors. For smaller projects I use a fusible batting. When you press all of your layers together, they just stay in place! Love it.
ReplyDeletei love these! the orange and aqua is so cute. I've been wanting to make coasters for so long, too! And the pincushion, just too cute, yay for hedgehogs!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Love the hedgehogs...
ReplyDeleteJennifer :)
Lovely coasters! What is a basting spray and how exactly fo you use it? Is it like a glue spray that you use to stick teh fabric with the batting instead of using safety pins? Do you spray it on the fabric or on the batting? I know, silly question maybe but as you know - I am new here and learning new things every day. This won't be my first silly question, that is for sure. Ciao!
ReplyDeleteSo very cute, Mary! Too cute to use as coasters in my house. LOL!
ReplyDeleteLog cabins are a classic and look lovely in those pretty colors!
ReplyDeletelove these!!!!! especially the tiny hedgehogs in the center! you're making me fall in love with this aqua and orange combo!
ReplyDeleteThey are so pretty! I love the color combination.
ReplyDeleteThey turned out lovely! And I especially love the orange!
ReplyDeleteThese are so happy and cute! I use quilt basting spray by June Tailor that I found at Joann. It is about $10, so I get it only when I have a 40% off coupon ;) I don't know if 505 basting spray is better, but I am very much satisfied with the one I have ;)
ReplyDeleteThe color combination is fabulous! ANd I think the stitching looks great!
ReplyDeleteAwwwwwww...CUTEST little hedgehogs!!! I agree with another comment poster --- just get you some JoAnn's coupons and buy their basting spray. Any brand will do - I like the June Tailor very much though.
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable!!!!
ReplyDeleteI keep admiring your work. It's just so perfect, and "clean". I love how you top stitch. I've never done it, but then, I'm a very beginner patchworker, not even quilter.. he he
I've become your follower, since I can't wait what you'll be making next!
